Chapter 1

It was dark outside. Thousands of stars covered the night sky, shining brightly over the strange planet. Animals moved through the nearby forests, and the sounds of birds chirping and villagers talking filled the air.

A small village sat beneath the stars. Warm lights glowed from the houses as the villagers went about their nightly routines.

Suddenly, a door opened.

The sound of a baby crying came from inside.

A man rushed outside, shouting excitedly in an foreign language. He laughed with happiness as he looked toward the people gathering around him.

He wore a greenish outfit with long sleeves, gray and brown belts wrapped around his waist, and strange cat-like ears sat on top of his head. A tail moved behind him as he continued shouting.

He turned around and called out again in the foreign language.

Then he laughed.

“She’s here! She’s here!” he shouted.

Men and women began coming out of their homes to see the newborn child. The man hugged a woman nearby, still laughing with joy.

“Yeah! Come, come, come!” the man called.

More people gathered as the baby’s cries continued.

Then the village chief arrived.

She was an older woman wearing a large coat and a scarf-like covering that wrapped around her head and body. The villagers immediately made room for her.

The man ran past her, quickly bowing his head respectfully before continuing toward his home.

The chief smiled and continued walking toward the house.

Everyone gathered around the entrance, and several people stepped inside to see the newborn baby.

The nurses carefully carried the baby toward her mother. The dark-skinned woman gently took her baby girl into her arms.

Some villagers looked through the windows, trying to get a glimpse of the newborn. The mother smiled softly as she looked down at her child.

The chief entered the house.

The villagers immediately made a path for her.

She approached the mother and her newborn daughter .

The mother lifted her head and looked toward the chief before bowing respectfully.

The chief stepped closer.

The baby began to move her head toward her mother, making soft noises with her eyes still closed.

The mother smiled.

“Tatiana,” she said warmly.

The chief looked down at the baby.

One Year Later

It was early in the morning.

Birds sang throughout the village as the sun began to rise.

Nikolai was working on the roof of his house with the help of a small robot. The robot handed him a tool, and he took it before continuing his work.

Around the village, other people were already outside working on their homes and completing their daily chores.

Elena walked outside with Tatiana.

She carried her toward a swing, and Tatiana looked around happily as the sunlight touched her face.

He turned toward his mother and made a happy little cooing sound.

“Are you sure She’s ready?” Nikolai asked as he looked down from the roof.

Elena looked up at him.

“Nikolai, it is tradition,” she replied.

“In the old days, old ways were for the old,” Nikolai said, looking down at her. “Not you, Elena. Not yet.”

He said it because he cared about her.

“Don’t make fun of it. You’ll insult the spirits,” Elena said in a scolding tone.

Tatiana looked up at them happily.

“The trees?” he asked, confused.

“Ancestors,” Elena explained.

She sighed before smiling slightly.

“All right, then. I mean no offense.”

She laughed quietly before walking into the house to get her weapon so she could go hunting.

She pressed a button, and the door closed behind her.

“Good hunting, Elena. My little Tanya,” Nikolai said with a smile.

Tatiana responded with happy baby noises.

⸻

Elena soon began walking toward the forest with Tatiana.

The villagers continued working on their homes as they passed by.

Eventually, Elena and Tatiana reached a path leading out of the village.

The chief noticed them.

“Off on a hunt?” She asked.

Elena stopped and turned toward the village chief.

“Has it been more than a year already?” the chief asked.

“It has, Galina,” Elena replied.

Galina began preparing herself.

An animal nearby began whining.

Galina crouched down and placed some food on the ground.

“Come on,” she said.

The animal approached and began eating.

Galina opened a small black box attached to her belt. She pulled out some blue powder and placed a little of it on hers fingertips.

“For luck,” Galina said.

She began speaking in the alien language.

Galina carefully placed the blue powder onto Tatiana’s forehead.

Tatiana immediately began cooing happily.

She seemed especially excited to hear her mother speaking the foreign language.

“Thank you, Galina,” Elena said.

She lifted her weapon and placed it over her shoulder.

Elena and Tatiana began walking away from the village.

Dogs barked as they passed, pointing toward Chika. She gave them some food before continuing into the forest.

Soon, elena found a place to sit.

She placed Tatiana nearby as she prepared to hunt.

The forest was beautiful.

Birds flew between the trees while strange animals jumped from branch to branch. Flowers grew everywhere, and the sounds of nature surrounded them.

Tatiana looked around curiously.

She seemed worried and confused by some of the animals.

She made a small cooing sound as she watched them.

Elena smiled.

“Look, Tatiana. Everywhere there is life,” she said.

She placed a hand gently on her daughter shoulder and showed him the plants and animals around them.

“Value it. Honor it.”

Tatiana responded with happy babbling.

They continued deeper into the forest.

Eventually, they reached a group of enormous flowers.

Elena approached one of them.

She raised her weapon and lightly struck the plant.

The flower floated around them.

Tatiana immediately giggled.

Elena laughed and struck another flower, making it float through the air.

Tatiana continued giggling.

Elena smiled as she watched her daughter.

Then her expression suddenly changed.

She noticed something moving nearby.

“Shh,” Elena whispered.

Tatiana continued babbling.

“Shh. Be quiet.”

She pointed toward an animal hidden in the grass.

Elena carefully moved forward, trying not to make any noise.

She needed to hunt so her family could have food.

Eventually, the animal moved into the open.

It was enormous.

There were three of them, each large enough to provide food for an entire family.

Elena slowly raised her weapon.

She took aim.

The animals looked around but didn’t seem to notice her.

Elena fired.

Two of the animals fell while the third lowered its head and continued eating.

Elena waited.

She didn’t immediately fire again.

Her eyes narrowed as she watched the remaining animal.

Eventually, she took her shot.

The animal fell.

Elena lowered her weapon.

She looked toward Tatiana.

She was sitting nearby.

She carefully approached the animal she had killed.

However, when she reached it, she noticed it was still breathing.

Elena stopped.

She looked down at it.

Tatiana shook her head and looked away.

She didn’t want to watch.

Elena gently touched his face and turned his head toward her.

“You must face death, Tatiana. Do not fear it,” she said gently.

Tatiana looked sad.

She didn’t want to look at the animal.

Elena closed her eyes for a moment before preparing to finish the hunt.

She pulled out her knife and placed a hand on the animal.

Before doing anything, she quietly prayed.

Galina placed a hand over her heart and closed her eyes as well.

Elena finished what she had started.

She then began preparing the animal so they could carry it home.

“He’s a heavy one,” elena said.

She looked toward Tatiana.

“This one will feed many. Do you think we can lift it?”

Tatiana clapped her hands together.

“Yes, I think so too,” elena said with a smile.

She stood up and wiped her face.

“We never take more than we need.”

She looked down at her daughter.

“I shall carry you and the Bison, unless you would like to carry him.”

Tatiana happily waved her hands and babbled.

Suddenly, something moved in the grass.

Elena stopped.

She immediately became alert.

Tatiana looked over her mother’s shoulder.

A large creature was slowly emerging from the grass.

It was an enormous apex predator.

It growled as it approached them.

Elena immediately raised her weapon.

The creature roared.

Tatiana became frightened.

Elena moved between the creature and her daughter.

The beast suddenly charged.

Elena fired at it, but the creature continued forward.

It knocked elena to the ground.

Tatiana cried out.

The beast grabbed at Elena as she struggled to protect herself.

She reached for her weapon and fought back.

The creature roared again.

Elena looked toward her son.

The beast was getting closer to her.

She couldn’t let it reach Tatiana.

She fired again.

The creature backed away.

From the village, Galina and Nikolai heard the sounds from the forest.

Nikolai immediately climbed down from the roof.

“Elena!” he shouted.

The villagers began running toward the forest.

Elena continued fighting the beast.

She picked up her knife and swung it back and forth, trying to keep the creature away from her child.

Tatiana watched her mother fight.

The beast attacked again.

Elena kept looking back at her daughter while trying to defend herself.

She wasn’t thinking about the food anymore.

All she cared about was Tatiana.

The creature lunged again.

Elena fought desperately to keep it away.

The villagers finally reached the area.

They raised their weapons, ready to help.

But the beast suddenly grabbed Tatiana.

“No! No! Tatiana!” Elena screamed.

Tatiana began crying.

The creature turned and ran toward the forest with her.

Elena fell to the ground.

“Tatiana!” she cried again.

She tried to get back up and chase after them.

Nikolai ran toward her.

“Tatiana!” he shouted.

Elena was crying as she stared toward the forest.

The villagers stood in silence.

Galina looked toward the forest with sadness.

She slowly began praying in the foreign language.

⸻

The Cave

The creature eventually reached a cave.

It carried Tatiana in its mouth before carefully placing her on the ground.

Tatiana began babbling.

The creature growled and showed its teeth.

Tatiana looked frightened.

The creature approached him.

It growled again.

Tatiana sneezed.

The creature paused.

Tatiana looked up at it and began making soft cooing sounds.

Slowly, the creature’s behavior changed.

It licked its wounds before looking back at Tatiana.

Tatiana stood up and began walking toward it.

The creature growled.

Tatiana continued forward.

The creature opened its mouth.

Tatiana reached out and placed her hand on its nose.

The creature immediately stopped growling.

They stared at each other.

Tatiana slowly lowered her hand.

The creature began growling again.

But Tatiana wasn’t afraid anymore.

⸻

Back at the Village

Night had fallen.

The entire village had gathered together.

They stood in a circle, their faces filled with worry.

“I’m sorry, Elena. There’s no sign of her or the creature,” someone said.

“We will go out in force,” another villager said. “We will not stop until we find her”

Nikolai looked toward the forest.

Then a roar echoed through the darkness.

Everyone immediately raised their weapons.

The creature was coming.

“Wait,” Galina said.

Everyone lowered their weapons.

Elena narrowed her eyes as she stared into the darkness.

The creature slowly emerged from the forest.

But something was different.

It was carrying something on its back.

It was Tatiana .

Tatiana looked happy when her saw her mother.

The creature slowly bent down, allowing the baby to climb off.

Elena immediately ran toward her son.

Tatiana reached her arms toward her.

Her mother picked her up and held him tightly.

The creature stood back.

Tatiana looked at it.

Elena began speaking to the creature in the foreign language.

Tatiana seemed to understand that she was thanking it for bringing her home.

The creature slowly turned around and began walking away.

Tatiana’s father ran toward them.

The villagers followed.

Chika stared at the creature in disbelief.

“Galina… how could this be?” Elena asked.

Galina looked at Tatiana.

Her expression changed.

“Star warden,” she whispered.

Everyone became silent.

“ Tatiana is star warden.”

Tatiana happily cooed in her mother’s arms.

Her eyes slowly closed as she began falling asleep.

And beneath the stars of the strange planet, the village finally realized that the child they had welcomed into the world was something far more important than they had ever imagined.
