MUTT - Leon Thomas

Mutt by Leon Thomas is about being a people pleaser for the one you love, like a dog. Or how Thomas describes it - a mutt. Alternatively, referring to someone as a 'mutt' is equivalent to calling them 'stupid' or 'dumb'. These words can also describe the acts that Thomas is doing for his partner. Here, he "can see past pretty faces, so he gets trouble trusting." This specific line tells us about his character - he goes for people's personalities, but because of ACTUALLY loving these people in his past relationships, they might've shown their true colours to him earlier, which makes him uneasy to trust again. This is a first sign of naivety we get to see.

In the pre-chorus, he talks about having no boundaries, and 'having his guard down' for her. This could mean that he usually has a tough exterior, referencing how a dog can let their guard down only with its owner(s). This further shows his naivety when it comes to relationships.

When it reaches the chorus, this was how I'd interpret it: she said "take your time, whats the rush" I said, "baby, I'm a dog, I'm a mutt"

I interpret this as him actually rushing the relationship, and doing things too quickly, maybe like how a dog would eat its meal in a rush. They crave it, its a literal NEED and he must also feel this way in the relationship - rushing through things because that's what he craves, but maybe also its become a habit for him, a result of his past relationships. When he listed of all the things he'd do for her (letting his guard down, being vulnerable..) its an emphasis on how far lengths he'd go for someone, to which I'd assume is also at a beginning of the relationship, hence the chorus.
